Tirunelveli Girl, Just 6 Years Old, Reaches Everest Base Camp – A Proud Moment for Tamil Nadu
In a truly inspiring achievement, 6-year-old Lalith Renu, a second-grade student from Tirunelveli, has etched her name in the records by reaching the Everest Base Camp, located at an altitude of 18,000 feet. With this exceptional feat, she becomes the first girl from Tamil Nadu under the age of 8 to complete the challenging trek to the base of the world’s tallest mountain.
Hailing from Ramayanpatti in Tirunelveli district, Lalith Renu is the daughter of Sridhar Venkatesh and Aparna. Her father works in a private company and has always supported his daughter’s adventurous spirit. Despite having no family background in mountaineering, Sridhar introduced Lalith to the beauty of hills and nature at a very young age.
Her mountaineering journey began at just 2.5 years old, when she trekked the Velliangiri Hills in Tamil Nadu. That early exposure instilled a love for the mountains, which has now blossomed into a historic achievement.
The journey to Everest Base Camp (EBC) is not an easy one. It demands endurance, courage, and strong mental resilience — traits rarely expected of a 6-year-old. But Lalith proved that age is just a number when passion leads the way.
Speaking about the journey, Sridhar Venkatesh said, “Trekking is not a family tradition, but I started taking her to the hills from the time she could walk. She developed a natural love for trekking. Her determination during the Everest Base Camp trek made us all proud.”
Lalith Renu’s achievement not only brings pride to Tirunelveli but also serves as an inspiration to children and parents across Tamil Nadu. It shows that with the right encouragement and early exposure, even the tallest dreams — quite literally — can be reached.
