How to register trees with the Revenue Department
7/3/2025

Tirunelveli’s green warriors are stepping up to protect the region’s natural heritage. In a proactive move to curb deforestation, a group of environmental enthusiasts in Gopalasamudram, Tirunelveli, have taken the initiative to mark and register hundreds of palm trees to safeguard them from illegal felling and destruction.
In the area near Palayangalvai, where numerous palm trees grow naturally, volunteers from a private environmental NGO—led by Nivek and Sabari Vasan—have been working tirelessly to preserve the native trees. Their mission: protect green spaces and create awareness on the ecological importance of palm trees.
🌳 How Are They Doing It?
Each tree is identified, cleaned of dried leaves, and marked with a unique color and number code. This code represents that the tree has been officially registered and protected. These numbers will soon be submitted to the Revenue Department, where a formal document will include the exact count and location of the protected trees.
Environmental activist Nivek explains,
“Every summer, we witness a rise in tree cutting, especially around agricultural lands, either for expansion or commercial gain. But palm and neem trees offer countless benefits to the land and people. By marking them with identification codes and registering them, we ensure their survival and legal protection.”
Once this documentation is completed, any threat to these trees can be reported and appropriate legal actions can be taken. This will not only discourage illegal deforestation but also act as a deterrent for those who attempt to profit by destroying nature.
🛡️ A Natural Shield for the Future
“This is like installing a legal fence around each tree,” says Nivek. Already, over 500 trees in Gopalasamudram have been marked and registered, and the team is planning to extend this initiative throughout Tirunelveli. Their work stands as a strong example of community-led environmental action.
Thanks to the efforts of these nature lovers, Tirunelveli’s green cover may finally receive the protection it deserves, ensuring a greener and more sustainable future for the next generations.
