In a deeply disturbing incident that has shocked the Christian community and the public at large, a Catholic priest from Kottaram in Kanyakumari district was reportedly assaulted and robbed by a gang suspected to be involved in an organized exploitation network.

The victim, 50-year-old Father Arul Seelan, was allegedly attacked late at night near the banks of the Thamirabarani River in Tirunelveli, a location often deserted during late hours. According to reports, he was approached by a group of unidentified individuals under suspicious circumstances.

The priest was physically assaulted and threatened, after which the assailants reportedly took away ₹1 lakh in cash, his mobile phone, ATM cards, and several personal belongings. Sources suggest the assailants may be linked to a larger network engaged in blackmail and extortion under the guise of homosexuality and social taboos, though this is yet to be confirmed by law enforcement.

The Tirunelveli police have launched an intense search operation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the violent assault and robbery. CCTV footage from nearby locations is being reviewed, and inquiries have begun across known hotspots in the city.

This incident has sparked outrage in the Christian community, with several faith leaders demanding swift justice and increased safety for religious figures, especially those working in remote or high-risk areas.

Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information that might help the investigation. Meanwhile, Father Arul Seelan is said to be recovering from the injuries sustained during the attack.

The case underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures and awareness about the increasing dangers faced by clergy and socially active individuals in rural and semi-urban areas.
