The Tirunelveli District Administration has officially declared July 8, 2025 (Tuesday) as a local holiday in view of the Aani Therottam Festival of the sacred Arulmigu Nellaiappar Gandhimathi Amman Temple, one of South Tamil Nadu’s most prominent Shiva temples.

Located in the heart of Tirunelveli city, the Nellaiappar Temple is famous for its grand Aani Thiruvizha, a 10-day annual festival celebrated with spiritual fervor and massive public participation. This year's festivities began with the ceremonial flag hoisting on June 30, 2025, marking the start of the festival. The most awaited highlight, Therottam (Car Festival), will take place on July 8, 2025.

This traditional chariot procession is considered the third-largest temple car festival in Tamil Nadu, drawing lakhs of devotees every year from across the region.
