In a major move to boost public healthcare in southern Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin virtually inaugurated multiple urban and primary health centres in Tirunelveli and Tenkasi districts. The initiative aims to strengthen the grassroots health infrastructure and provide better access to essential medical services for rural communities.
In Tirunelveli, ten new urban health centre buildings and a primary health centre (PHC) were launched. Two of these urban centres are located in Vickramasingapuram and Ambasamudram municipalities under the Tirunelveli Corporation. The event was attended by Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu, District Collector R. Sukumar, Corporation Commissioner Monika Rana, Mayor G. Ramakrishnan, MLA M. Abdul Wahab, Deputy Mayor K.R. Raju, and Tirunelveli District Panchayat Chairman V.S.R. Jegadeesh.
A special highlight was the inauguration of a new primary health centre at Udhayathur, located in the Radhapuram constituency. Built with an investment of ₹1.20 crore, this PHC includes obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, ENT, and general medicine departments. It also offers facilities for non-communicable disease testing, anti-rabies vaccination, and snake bite treatment. This centre is expected to benefit residents of Udhayathur who previously had to travel to Radhapuram, Koodankulam, or Kallikulam for basic medical care.
In neighboring Tenkasi district, a new PHC was inaugurated at Keezhakkalangal under Veerakeralampudhur taluk. Built at a cost of ₹1.20 crore, the facility was visited by District Collector A.K. Kamal Kishore, MP Rani Srikumar, and MLAs S. Palani Nadar and E. Raja.
According to Collector Kamal Kishore, the Keezhakkalangal PHC will directly benefit nearly 18,000 residents from nearby villages like Kurichaanpatti, Keezhakkalangal, and Balapathraramapuram.
This strategic investment in primary healthcare underscores the Tamil Nadu government’s commitment to providing quality health services in remote areas, ensuring equitable access to all sections of society.
