Shock in Tirunelveli: Father Kills His Own Daughter with a Billhook
In a tragic and shocking turn of events, 55-year-old Jayalakshmi, who had been taking care of her aging father Velu at their home in Melapalayam, Tirunelveli, was brutally murdered by him using a billhook (manvetti). Despite her continued care and attention, Velu, suffering from age-related health problems, including a knee surgery, allegedly killed his daughter stating she wasn't taking proper care of him.
What Happened?
On June 17, Jayalakshmi had lunch with her husband and later served food to her father. Her husband Kali Muthu left for routine work and returned in the evening to find the house locked from the outside. He waited, assuming she had gone nearby, but grew suspicious when repeated calls to her phone went unanswered – the phone was ringing from inside the house.
He broke open the lock with the help of his sister, only to find his wife lying in a pool of blood, murdered. Police were informed immediately, and forensic experts and sniffer dogs were brought in for investigation.
Who Did It – And Why?
Surprisingly, the only person in the house during the time was her father, Velu – who was missing when police arrived. Investigation revealed a shocking history – Velu had previously served jail time for murdering his own father, Jayalakshmi’s grandfather.
Suspecting foul play, police tracked him down. Despite his mobility issues, Velu had somehow walked toward the Melapalayam police station. He couldn’t walk further and was found resting under a tree near the station. He was taken into custody.
Velu’s Confession:
In his statement, Velu said he often quarreled with his daughter, claiming she didn’t take care of him “properly.” Despite her dedication, he accused her of neglect. On the day of the murder, after she had served him food and gone to rest, he attacked her with a billhook in a sudden outburst of rage.
Health & Legal Condition:
Velu was found in poor health and has been admitted to the government hospital for medical attention. Legal proceedings are underway.
🟫 Reflection: When Family Care Turns Fatal
This tragedy highlights a dark side of elderly care, mental health neglect, and unresolved trauma within families. Despite her patience and support, Jayalakshmi lost her life to her own father’s mental instability. This case is not just about crime – it’s about the urgent need for mental health support, family counseling, and community intervention.
