In the heart of Tirunelveli district lies the Pirkan Kulam lake, once a thriving water body but over the years reduced to a dumping ground covered in invasive Prosopis Juliflora (Karuvellam) trees and waste. The story of its revival is a moving example of community-driven environmental action.

What was once neglected and forgotten is now receiving a new lease of life—thanks to the determination of a group of local youth who initiated a mission to clean and restore the lake. Without waiting for external support, they rolled up their sleeves, grabbed shovels, and started clearing the waste and unwanted vegetation.

This grassroots movement did not go unnoticed. Soon, the District Collector, senior administrative officials, and local Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) joined hands with the volunteers. Their presence and participation gave a tremendous boost to the momentum of the restoration drive. The unity between the youth, public representatives, and officials sent a powerful message to the wider community.

Mr. Vasan, a resident of the area, emotionally shared his thoughts on the effort:

"This Pirkan Kulam was once a dumping ground covered with Karuvellam trees. Seeing it being cleaned and restored brings great happiness and hope."

The restoration is not just about cleaning a waterbody—it is a symbol of civic responsibility, environmental awareness, and the impact of united action. It reflects how the younger generation, when empowered and encouraged, can lead meaningful change.

This initiative is already inspiring nearby communities to consider similar actions. It's a testimony to the fact that when people come together with a shared vision, even long-neglected spaces can be transformed.

In the coming days, Pirkan Kulam is expected to be not only a restored lake but also a green space that supports biodiversity, groundwater recharge, and community well-being.
