In a firm response to growing concerns over social media misuse, the Tirunelveli Police have arrested a 22-year-old youth, S. Mathu, from Devarkulam, for attempting to incite caste-based conflict through a video shared in a WhatsApp group.
The video, reportedly created and circulated with the intent to spark discord between communities of different castes, came under the radar of the authorities following public complaints. Upon being alerted, the Devarkulam Police swiftly registered a case, and an investigation was launched.
As part of a broader crackdown to prevent such incidents, the Tirunelveli District Police have intensified their surveillance of social media platforms. The move comes in response to increasing concerns over individuals using digital platforms to post divisive content.
Under the directive of Superintendent of Police N. Silambarasan, the Tirunelveli Police are also actively conducting awareness programmes across schools, colleges, and public gatherings. These initiatives are aimed at educating the public—especially the youth—about the legal consequences of posting inflammatory or offensive content online.
The police have reiterated that cyber misuse and hate speech will not be tolerated, and criminal action will be taken against any individual attempting to disturb social harmony through digital platforms.
This incident serves as a reminder of the growing need for digital responsibility and community awareness in an era dominated by social media interactions.
