Seevalaperi, Tirunelveli:
In a decisive action against illegal sand mining, the Seevalaperi police conducted a surprise raid on Sunday night at Kuppaikurichi and seized two lorries and an earthmover used for illicit quarrying operations. The operation was initiated following a tip-off from local sources concerned about the growing menace of unauthorized sand extraction in the region.

According to the police, when the team reached the location, they found sand being loaded onto two lorries using an earthmover. As soon as the suspects noticed the police presence, they fled the scene, abandoning the machinery and vehicles at the site.

All the confiscated vehicles were later transported to the Seevalaperi police station for investigation. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the vehicles are owned by a former village panchayat president, who has since gone underground and is currently evading arrest.

Serious Environmental and Legal Concerns

Illegal sand mining is not only a violation of environmental laws but also contributes to severe ecological damage, including riverbed erosion, loss of aquatic habitats, and water table depletion. The police action highlights the ongoing effort by law enforcement to curb these activities in and around Tirunelveli.

Authorities have registered a case under relevant sections and are on the lookout for the accused individuals involved in the mining racket. This operation is seen as part of a broader crackdown on unregulated mining and transportation of natural resources, which often operate under the influence of politically connected individuals.

Community Response

Local residents have welcomed the move, noting that unchecked sand mining has had a detrimental impact on their environment, especially on local water bodies. They expressed hope that such enforcement actions would be taken more frequently to deter future violations.

As the investigation continues, police officials have assured that further action will be taken to identify all individuals and networks involved in the illegal operation.
