Major Infrastructure Push: Minister K.N. Nehru Reviews Progress of Tirunelveli West Bypass Road

Tirunelveli, July 5, 2025 – As part of the ongoing efforts to transform urban infrastructure in southern Tamil Nadu, Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. Nehru conducted an inspection of multiple development projects in Tirunelveli, including the much-anticipated West Bypass Road. This critical road project aims to ease congestion in the busy junctions of Palayamkottai and Tirunelveli city.

Connecting Key Routes for Smooth Transit

The Tirunelveli West Bypass Road, which is currently under construction, will connect Konganthaanpaarai intersection near IRT Polytechnic on the Tirunelveli–Kanniyakumari Highway with Thaazhaiyooththu via Tharuvai, Abhishekapatti, and Rastha. The bypass will serve as a vital corridor for vehicles traveling from Nagercoil, Thoothukudi, and Tiruchendur to reach Papanasam, Tenkasi, Courtallam, Kerala, Sankarankovil, and Rajapalayam without entering the congested city roads.

Phase 1 Nearing Completion

The bypass project is being executed in three phases, and the first phase is likely to be completed by the end of December 2025. It features:

  • Two elevated bridges

  • Two minor bridges

  • 44 culverts

  • One rail overbridge

All these are being developed at an estimated outlay of ₹180 crore. Land acquisition for the second phase is nearing completion, and administrative clearance is expected shortly.

Minister’s Instructions and Site Visits

During his inspection at the Konganthaanpaarai intersection, Minister Nehru instructed Highways Department officials to adhere to deadlines and expedite construction work without compromising quality. His visit reinforces the state government’s commitment to fast-tracking critical infrastructure that boosts connectivity and decongests urban zones.

Smart City Mission Projects Under Review

The Minister also visited key infrastructure developed under the Smart City Mission, including:

  • Truck terminal

  • Market complex

  • Commercial space at Old Pettai

To promote utilization, he proposed attractive rental reductions to make currently idle commercial spaces more appealing to businesses. “Instead of allowing these spaces to sit unused, we’re considering rental cuts to stimulate occupancy,” he said.

Additional Inspections: Focus on Education and Housing

The Minister, along with Higher Education Minister Govi. Chezhiaan, also inspected:

  • The Car Streets around Nellaiappar Temple ahead of the Aani Therottam festival on July 8, 2025

  • The Government Arts and Science College construction at Maanur

  • The housing project for Sri Lankan Tamils at Gangaikondan

Officials Present During the Visit

The inspection tour was accompanied by several key officials, including:

  • District Collector R. Sukumar

  • Corporation Commissioner Monika Rana

  • MLA M. Abdul Wahab

  • District Revenue Officer M. Suganya

Conclusion

The Tirunelveli West Bypass Road project, along with various Smart City and housing initiatives, signals a transformative phase for Tirunelveli's infrastructure. With strong administrative backing and consistent on-ground monitoring, the region is gearing up for a more connected, less congested, and growth-ready future.
